WISCONSIN: CWD COLLECTION PLAN PRESENTED

08/15/2016

A deer sampling plan to collect tissue for testing if chronic wasting disease (CWD) is present in free ranging deer around the private deer ranch south of Three Lakes was recently presented to area Conservation Congress delegates.

Two deer tested positive for CWD at the ranch which triggered a baiting and feeding ban in Oneida, Vilas, and Forest County although liquid scents are still allowed.

DNR wildlife manager Chuck McCullough presented the plan emphasizing cooperation of successful hunters is needed to reach 100 samples.

“Our active sample area is 16 townships ranging from Eagle River to Rhinelander to Crandon with a concentrated effort within two miles of the deer ranch,” McCullough said.

Private landowners near the ranch will be able to have scientific collection permits good for any sex deer. DNR will also try to locate collection kiosks with a freezer in Hiles, Three Lakes, Monico, Sugar Camp, and Rhinelander with the site in Three Lakes staffed opening weekend of the November 9-day season.
